Dec. 3, 2013
Composer' Guild Concert : 7:30p.m., Grant Hall Recital Hall, UMKC.
Dragon Dance - for four fingers(2013) Piano Etude No.7
Shao Zheng, Piano
Program Note:
This short piano etude is inspired by a TV program I watched several years ago featuring the Korean pianist Lee Hee-ah who only have four fingers. I was deeply moved, so I composed this piece for four fingers only (thumbs and pinkies) to make myself and every pianists experience her extreme difficulty.
Dragon Dance is a form of traditional dance and performance in Chinese culture. Dragons are believed to bring good luck to people, which are
reflected in their qualities that include great power, dignity, fertility, wisdom and auspiciousness. The appearance of a dragon is both frightening and bold but it has a benevolent disposition, and so eventually became an emblem to represent imperial authority.

UMKC Symphony Orchestra Reading for New Compositions : 1:45p.m., UMKC Conservatory Performing Arts Center Room 326
Piano Concerto (the first movement)
Shao Zheng, piano solo; Parinya Chucherdwatanasak, conductor; UMKC Symphony Orchestra
Program Note:
For most of times when I am composing, I would like to combine the“modern” and “tradition”, so this Piano Concerto has a “tradition” form and a “modern”sound. The three movements have the typical classical tempo style as “fast-slow-fast”. As for the first movement: the double-exposition, the theme, the transition, and then the theme-development part create a “sonata-like” form, although it is definitely not a reaclassical
sonata form.
